THE DEVIL BEHIND PLANS
The Devil behind plans: An interview with my inner Cynic
(In this blogpost, our in-house student Psychologist delights with a conversation with her inner self; A talk of Resolutions and how to get it right) - leave us a comment if this is relatable and share with someone!
Me: New year, new me!
Cy: January confidence is loud, October habits are formed from consistency.
Me: Cy, what's the deal with new year resolutions?
Cy: Oh, they're just a recipe for disappointment. You promise yourself the world and by April, you're back to snoozing through alarms.
Me: Harsh,but isn't it good to set goals?
Cy: Goals are fine. It's the delulu of "I'll change overnight" that's the problem. Want real change?Not a flood of resolutions.
Me: So what's the alternative?
Cy: Ditch the hype. Pick one thing,do it gradually,do it daily.
Me: Toorh. Sounds like a slow process but I want fast results!
Cy: Fast results are overrated,think sustainability.
You want to run a marathon, you don't sprint the first mile. You walk,jog.
Me: Cycy,on the other hand what do you think happens to all those "abandoned goals" we collect over the years? The ones we meant to achieve "someday"?
Cy: Oh, they're like exes on social media, they just... exist. Unfollowed, unfulfilled. "Someday" is just a cute way of saying "never."
Me: Ahhh! Does that mean we should stop setting goals altogether?
Cy: Goals aren't the problem,delusion is. Set 'em, but minimize the fairy tale ending. Plan for bumps by considering other option just incase,always consider the "what-ifs." What if you fail? What if life happens? Now, plan around those.
Me: This sounds tough and less self confident mehn!
Cy: Tough but necessary.
Identify 3 things that’ll derail you, plan tiny backups.
Let's get practical.
Goal = read more books.
Bumps:
1. No time → Backup: listen to audiobooks while in transit.
2. Book gets boring → Backup: switch genres.
3. Distractions at home → Backup: Library.
Goal = eat healthier.
Bumps:
1. Craving junk food→ Backup: prep healthy snacks ahead.
2. No fresh ingredients → Backup: frozen veggies works just as well.
3. Busy week → Backup: Meal prep on weekends or simple recipes.
Big goals can be scary,seductive and fleeting. Small habits on the other hand are the realest gee.
It's okay to start small,baby steps are a crucial part of a child's growth for a reason.
